You can also do this:

After you create a new project, go to File > Project Properties (Command+J) and change "Initial Photo Placement" to Fit or Crop in order to set the default behaviour in iMovie when you place in still images.

That way you save time from not having to adjust EVERY photo.

very helpful. for latest version iMovie, above top right "movie pane", you see Fit/Crop to Fill/Ken Burns. Select Fit. (9/2015)
